What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem needs a same-day visit, but these usually do:

  • Severe or lasting tooth pain
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or loosened
  • A cracked, chipped or broken tooth
  • A lost filling, crown or bridge that is causing pain
  • Swelling in the gums, face or jaw, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
  • Bleeding that will not stop after dental work or an injury

If you are unsure, call us anyway. We would rather hear from you early than have a small problem turn into a bigger one.

What to do While you Wait for Your Appointment

  • Knocked-out tooth: Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in a small container of milk. Time matters here, so call us immediately.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water and floss gently to clear out anything stuck between teeth. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Broken or cracked tooth: Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress to limit swelling.
  • Lost filling or crown: Keep the crown if you still have it. A little sugar-free gum or dental cement from the pharmacy can cover a sensitive spot until you are seen.

When to skip the dentist and go to the ER: facial swelling that is spreading, a fever along with dental pain, or any trouble breathing or swallowing. These can signal a serious infection and need hospital care.

What to Expect When You Call

A real person will ask a few quick questions about your symptoms, your pain level and when it started. We will tell you whether you need to come in right away and give you simple steps to stay comfortable until you arrive. At the visit, we focus first on relieving pain and treating the urgent problem. If you need follow-up care, such as a root canal, crown or extraction, we will explain your options clearly before anything is done.

Emergency Dental Care FAQs

What qualifies as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes severe pain, broken or knocked-out teeth, infections, or any oral injury that requires immediate attention.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out? Hold it by the crown, rinse it gently, and try to put it back in the socket. If that is not possible, store it in milk and call us right away. A tooth that is seen within about an hour has the best chance of being saved.

What should I do if my crown falls off?
Keep the crown safe and call our office. Avoid chewing on the affected side, and we’ll restore it as quickly as possible.

Are same-day appointments available?
Yes! Magnolia Mountain Dentistry prioritizes dental emergencies and offers same-day care whenever possible.

How can I manage pain until my appointment?
Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums, as it can cause irritation.

Can I come in without being a current patient? Yes. New patients are welcome for emergency care. We will ask for a few basic details when you call so we can get you seen faster.

Is a toothache an emergency?
It can be. Pain that is severe, lasts more than a day, or comes with swelling or fever should be looked at quickly. Mild sensitivity can often wait for a regular appointment, but a call is always welcome.

Do you treat patients outside Asheville? Yes. Many of our emergency patients come from Woodfin, Fletcher, Emma, Weaverville and the surrounding area.
